I am a freelance graphic designer and after talking to multiple designers (and non-designers) they've told me I charge way too little for my hourly rate. Talking to one designer who's skillset is about the same as mine, she charges nearly 3 times as much as I do. I have one good client that comes back to me time and again. What should I say to my client? and should I double my rates just like that or gradually build them up in increments? Asked by Carrie - Sat Nov 15 02:14:29 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Build it in increments. Suddenly doubling or tripling your rates only makes you look greedy and out for the money rather than the passion and commitment to your client. Explain to your client that you are considering a rate increase of say $10 per hour by the end of the month and an additional $10 per hour by the first of the new year. If he/she is a respectable and understanding client, they will be accepting of the increase. Q. My skillset is IBM Mainframe(JCL,COBOL,DB2) with 2.9 years experience. Please help me. Asked by McQueen~ Its a Girl!!~PrayingGod - Tue Jan 6 11:41:11 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. There's very little demand in the US for COBOL programmers, and 3 years experience won't interest a prospective employer. To sponsor you, they must show they tried to fill the position locally, but were unable to find anyone with a matching skill level. There are many, many programmers with these skills, so an employer just could not demonstrate that you have 'special skills' needed in the US.
